Improved native understorey establishment in mine waste rock in Australia’s wet–dry tropics

چکیده

Re-establishment of understorey in mine waste can be challenging because its physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics. This project investigated amelioration treatments for establishing native rock at Ranger uranium mine, including the addition fine sand, fertiliser, surface litter, incorporated organic matter, or a combination fertiliser litter. Trials were established shade house situ on waste-rock landform. Several grass legume species had seedling emergence growth being monitored. In situ, litter generally twice as many seedlings emerge did other tallest mean height most species, likely it created microclimate that retained moisture moderated temperature. house, no treatment significantly greater than control (except Acacia gonocarpa F.Muell. with litter). Fertiliser application resulted taller plants but effect which suggests under well watered conditions, plant is affected by nutrient deficiency, whereas field water supply main growth-limiting factor. When hot seasonally wet–dry climates, applying seeds may improve initial establishment.

Assessment of two kinetic tests to predict the acid mine drainage in waste rock samples of a uranium mine

Acid mine drainage is the result of the oxidation process of sulfide bearing rocks. This process occurs when the sulfide material is exposed to atmospheric conditions. Under these conditions, successive oxidation reactions yield sulfuric acid generating acidic waters. This problem becomes more serious when the surrounding rocks are not able to neutralize the acid. The low pH condition of the dr...

An Assessment of the Performance and CarcassYield of Broilers Fed Indomie Waste® in the Humid Tropics

This study was conducted using one hundred and eighty (180) day-old broiler chicks, of Anak strain to assess the levels of inclusion of indomie waste meal as a substitute for maize at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%. The birds were randomly assigned to dietary treatments using completely randomized design (CRD). Each treatment contained 3 replicates and each replicate had 6 birds. The study lasted for e...

Chapter 11: Mine Waste Dump

The Overburden of waste and uneconomic mineralized rock is required to be removed to mine the useful mineral resource in a surface mining operation. In this process a dump is formed by casting the waste material and dumping it in nearby area. The dump so formed is known as mine waste dump. Waste dump may be classified as internal and external dump. External dump is created outside the pit where...

Actinorhizal Alder Phytostabilization Alters Microbial Community Dynamics in Gold Mine Waste Rock from Northern Quebec: A Greenhouse Study

Phytotechnologies are rapidly replacing conventional ex-situ remediation techniques as they have the added benefit of restoring aesthetic value, important in the reclamation of mine sites. Alders are pioneer species that can tolerate and proliferate in nutrient-poor, contaminated environments, largely due to symbiotic root associations with the N2-fixing bacteria, Frankia and ectomycorrhizal (E...
